Marvel’s Secret War rages on and Captain Marvel and the Carol Corps #4 are action all the way, but with a conventional war-story sensibility. The Carol Corps, aces of the Banshee Squadron, jet-flying female version of the WWII heroes the Blackhawks, are on the run from Doctor Doom’s police force, the Thor Corps. But how can a bunch of fly-girls hope to withstand a fight against gods?

Mortal they may be, but the Thor Corps can’t match their moxie. When they battle cry “Banshees, give ‘em Hell!” Ultimately the Carol Corps struggle, so they launch one last desperate gambit: flying into the void. After one of the Thors Captain Marvel’s friend Kit warns her she’ll die, Carol tells Kit it’s worth it to have the truth. When they reach their destination, what they find surprises them.

Captain Marvel and the Carol Corps #4 is largely female created, and writers Kelly Sue DeConnick and Kelly Thompson celebrate their gender. “A Banshee is born like a bullet from a gun, and she shoots through the world with a fiery momentum,” notes a caption. Laura Braga’s and Paolo Pantalena’s artwork may be loose but well-drawn and the action sequences put the pedal well and truly to the metal.

Marvel Comics had given itself a challenging task to weave all its stories into the Secret Wars fabric. But Marvel have managed to maintain each character’s integrity along the way, and Captain Marvel and the Carol Corps #4 is no exception to this.
