Dawn/Vampirella #5
Dynamite

Dawn has been a popular goth seductress with a heart of gold since her premier in 1989 and it did seem like only a matter of time until she crossed swords (or should that be stakes) with Vampirella, the original and iconic blood sucking girl looking for a bad time.

Dynamite has managed to enlist the services of Joseph Michael Linsner, Dawn’s creator, not only to write the crossover story but also to illustrate every issue. This commission has obviously been a labour of love for Linsner and as a result the comic book is beautifully written and drawn.

The plot draws heavily on 1001 Arabian Nights, Dawn and Vampirella have to keep a demon called Mosodik interested in their story telling contest whilst they plot to escape from his clutches. I am a little nonplussed by the appearance of some Hindu gods in the narrative. This seems a touch disrespectful to me but maybe I am being a little too sensitive.

Dawn / Vampirella #5 starts with a predictable catfight between our two protagonists, although they soon remember that they are on the same side. It is a bit like an episode of Dallas as it all turns out to be a dream anyway!

Mosodik has been having visions of an heir with one green eye and one blue (Dawn has green eyes, Vampirella’s are blue) and his hopes are realised at the end of this issue. I won’t tell you anymore about his heir other than to say it sure ain’t David Bowie!
