Scarlet Witch #1

In Scarlet Witch #1, Wanda Maximoff, the eponymous hero, Scarlet Witch, embraces her destiny and now acting solo investigates a case leading Scarlet Witch to conclude witchcraft itself is under siege. After losing her mind and creating Marvel’s House of M storyline (she killed Hawkeye!), Wanda wants to prove she’s a good witch. She has help along the way from the ghost of Agatha Harkness, whom Fantastic Four fans will recognize.

Scarlet Witch notices a series of violent murders by seemingly possessed people, and that cats from lower Manhattan are mysteriously dying. Scarlet Witch discovers a dark force is making witchcraft itself sick. The Scarlet Witch feels driven to face the threat.

Writer James Robinson, still trying to capture the magic of his critically acclaimed Starman series from the 1990s, imbues the story with depth. Robinson’s reference to the real 1730s Paris cat massacre, for example, is surprising and clever. Likewise the dialogue is as smart and lyrical as befits Robinson’s reputation.

The art by Vanessa Del Rey and colouring by Jordie Bellaire is reminiscent of Michael Gaydos’s Alias (Jessica Jones), loose and stylish, and full of contrast. The art works well with the mystical nature of the character and narrative.

With Scarlet Witch #1 Robinson is off to a great start. It’s more than just a way to boost the character in the movies, and is interesting, fun and meaningful. We can all look forward to the next issue.
