Silk #1 Marvel Comics
Silk #1
Marvel Comics

New York has a new spider and her name is Cindy Moon, aka Silk. But unlike Spider-Man, her boss and head of Fact Channel, J. Jonah Jameson likes Silk and is building her up in the press. Normally that would be good news except Silk is trying to gain a bad reputation in order to infiltrate the Goblin Nation and expose their leader the Goblin King.

Silk #1 introduces the character in her new environment and is a good starting point for new readers. Like Spider-Man she can’t shut up while wrangling the bad guys. “I spent 10 years in a bunker, okay? I apologize for nothing!” Silk says.

Silk stages a fight with S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Mockingbird (whom Silk calls Boo Radley; get it?) but doesn’t get any closer to her goal. Silk reports to Black Cat whose gang is the Goblins’ rival, but Silk is playing a dangerous game. “Working undercover? Only person to watch your back is you,” Mockingbird tells her.

Stacey Lee’s artwork displays a slightly cartoony style, but is a fine storyteller, with only the occasional below par panel. The colours by Ian Herring are heavy on pastels and purples, making for some nice effects.

Silk #1 is not particularly deep or meaningful comic book, what it is though is a fun romp and is definitely worth reading.
