Supergirl Episode #7 Human for a Day marks two major changes in the series. First, in order to get around the problem of Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) being too powerful and having no weakness except Kryptonite, now her cells can be drained of energy, as they were following the Red Tornado fight the previous episode. The new installment gets points for using it as a springboard to explore issues of hope and fear, even if it’s a bit in your face.

The second change is the introduction of powerhouse J’Onn J’Onzz (pronounced Jones) (David Harewood), in comic books a hero as strong as Superman. It will be interesting to see what the writers do with the character, who, unlike Supergirl, has chosen to remain hidden from humanity.

In Human for a Day a powerful earthquake hits National City and Kara/Supergirl is powerless to help. Or is she? To the rescue comes Cat Grant (Calista Flockhart), still the best character in the series, to give the citizens hope and inspiring even Supergirl herself. A sub-plot involves powerful alien Jemm (Charles Halford) (no relation to Jem and the Holograms) trying to escape the Department of Extra-Normal Operations.

Although still naïve and cliché-ridden—naturally there’s a school bus filled with kids about to go off a cliff—Human for a Day is an improvement on previous episodes. It’s not eloquent, but not totally devoid of meaning either. However, it still sometimes feels as if Supergirl remains best viewed through the lens of a 14-year-old girl.
