The name’s Vaas, Mikado Vaas and he is the latest big bad SOB in the ongoing adventures of Will Eisner’s The Spirit. Taking on the mantle of one of the industry’s bona fide legends is no mean feat and Matt Wagner rises to the occasion magnificently in Will Eisner’s The Spirit #8.

Set a few years on from the classic Spirit adventures – Ebony is now all grown up and chasing girls – Ellen Dolan is now a Councilwoman – Silk Satin is a devoted mother and Commissioner Dolan is on the verge of retirement – it still retains all the classic elements of the original series.

For Will Eisner’s The Spirit #8, Dan Schkade’s artwork exquisitely evokes Eisner’s style, easing the transition from past to present in this homage and riveting new direction for The Spirit.

Will Eisner’s The Spirit #8 sees our big blue hero come into possession of a sinister idol, leading The Spirit to a feisty Rabbi called Bernie Lieberman and a mystery dating back to WWII. If any character deserves to be called a classic, it’s Will Eisner’s The Spirit. Although Will Eisner may no longer be with us, his Spirit most definitely lives on.

Miss this one at your peril.
