With the sub-title: Marine Conservationist Action Force there is no way The Massive: Ninth Wave #5 could be mistaken as anything but a comic book with a conscience.

The The Massive: Ninth Wave #5 has a plot involving the rescue of war refugees that ends up with Callum Israel getting onto the FBI’s most wanted list they could also have used that old favourite: “Ripped From The Headlines!” especially as there is an ulterior motive behind the humanitarian mission – isn’t there always?

For The Massive: Ninth Wave #5 I found Garry Brown’s artwork. with its grey infused colouring only mildly compelling and the pacing too slow to raise much of a temperature.

It does raise an interesting question, though. Why do we read comic books? Do we want to lose ourselves in bright, four colour fantasy filled with action, violence and humour? Or do we want an ecological/civil rights lecture when we get nothing but that on TV and in the newspapers?

In The Massive: Ninth Wave #5 the choice is yours.
