A dirty part of a dirty city is run by the Weavers, an organised crime ring in which every member is infected with a spider-like parasite. It’s The Godfather meets Venom. In Weavers #1 after the boss’ sister dies in a bar bombing her parasite finds Sid Thyme, and now he’s a member if he wants to be or not.

In Weavers #1 each member’s power is different, and for Sid, he can produce a deadly Cthulhu-like manifestation. Once he learns to control it, that is. But after Sid starts asking too many questions boss Don Harvest wonders if Sid’s a cop. “None us gets to say who joins the family. Only who leaves it,” Harvest warns. So Harvest assigns his pariah daughter Frankie and Sid to solve his sister’s murder.

Like the TV series Heroes, the conceit in Weavers #1 allows writer Simon Spurrier to introduce any super power he likes without having to explain any of it. Each character has a unique voice and the dialogue seamlessly informs the reader of all pertinent information without resorting to pedantic narration. Even the minor characters get good dialogue.

Dylan Burnett’s art is funky for Weavers #1, but his story-telling technique can’t be questioned. Triona Farrell’s colouring keeps everything dark reflecting the environment.

Weavers #1 is about characters with super powers but is an organised crime drama first. The strong start promises an interesting mini-series with plenty of scope and potential. And you, as the reader, if you decide to pull away from Weavers #1, well it’s just going to drag you back in.
