Red Sonja Vol. 4 #1 Dynamite

Stop the press! This is Red Sonja? Warrior woman of majestic Hyrkania, contemporary of Conan the Cimmerian himself!

So, what the blazes are we doing with an opening shot of New York in 2017? Ah, but then the police get a call about a naked woman swinging a sword and we get our first clue that they haven’t just put the wrong cover on Red Sonja Vol. 4 #1.

The ‘naked woman’ bit is just a tease, because Red Sonja, for it is she, is still wearing her trademark chainmail bikini and since it’s snowing, those metal links are really gonna sting which just goes to prove what a tough gal she is.

One minute our red-headed heroine is fighting Kulan Gath and the next she finds herself in the middle of modern day New York fending off a small army of NYPD’s finest. Nobody speaks her language, obviously, except rookie cop Max whose Mom taught him something similar, but even Max can’t stop Sonja being taken in for psychiatric evaluation. And that’s when things get even weirder as the modern day followers of Kulan Gath are still out to get her.

On the run in a strange land and a strange time where no-one, except Max, can even understand her, Red Sonja faces impossible odds of her illustrious career in this roller-coaster of an opening instalment from Amy Chu.

All the best Red Sonja elements are here and the “stranger in a strange land” storyline gives Red Sonja Vol. 4 #1 a new twist, keeping the story fresh and interesting. Will she defeat her enemies and get back home? Only a fool would bet against her and the journey is set to be rocky and riotous, so hop on board now for the ride of your life.
