Legendary Red Sonja #1 Dynamite

Legendary Red Sonja #1 gives us the steampunk version of everyone’s favourite chain-mail bikini wearing redhead, which makes the ‘legendary’ part of the title a bit at odds with the content, but, hey, I mentioned the chain-mail bikini, right, so all’s well in Red Sonja’s world. Right. Right?

Well, not really. Red Sonja’s just exposed a crime boss as a card cheat and now his men are out to ventilate her with snazzy steampunk shooting irons and she can’t even distract them with money. Which is where Captain Nemo comes in, or at least his submarine, because Nemo is the late Captain Nemo in this reality and Sonja has inherited his ship. Handy for a quick, but not subtle, getaway especially when a mysterious young woman attaches herself to the submarine in a desperate plea to get Sonja’s attention.

Long story short, this is a Romeo and Juliet thing with black magician and reputed cannibal Kulan Gath thrown into the mix for good measure. Purists may baulk at the steampunk overtones but Igor Lima draws Red Sonja like a seasoned pro and Mark Andreyo’s plot zips along like a turbo-charged greyhound.

Legendary Red Sonja #1 may not be the truly ‘legendary’ as in original, Red Sonja but with material this good nobody is likely to complain.
