Ah, a certain redheaded female, resplendent in a chain mail bikini, sporting a big sword. Need I say more?

Oh, okay, I will then. Well, Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith created the character Red Sonja for Marvel in 1973, based on Robert E. Howard’s 1934 short story “The Shadow of the Vulture”. Most long-time fans will remember with fondness and a certain admiration for artist Frank Thorne’s stint on the character during which the aforementioned chain mail bikini became even more prominent or less, depending on your point of view!

Many years later, Dynamite take over the creative reins and, several incarnations later, Red Sonja has moved on from her Hyrkanian homeland and into the steampunk arena where she’s currently battling a horde of hand-stitched animal people created by Victor . . . ah, that would be telling.

This is classy, confident storytelling that rattles on at a cracking pace. Readable, enjoyable, buyable.
