Quake S.H.I.E.L.D 50th Anniversary #1 Marvel Comics

Now TV’s Marvels Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has introduced Daisy Johnson as Quake, Marvel have featured Johnson in her own one-shot book, Quake: S.H.I.E.L.D. 50th Anniversary. The story takes place before Avengers #20 (2010) and details how Captain America moves Daisy from being a support agent to the so-called “first team”, otherwise known as the Avengers.

Not the deepest storylines in Quake: S.H.I.E.L.D. 50th Anniversary #1, but it sure is fun to read. Quake, who Nick Fury recruits in the comic book version, can’t figure out why Cap has moved her into combat operations. But that’s because Quake doesn’t know Steve Rogers like we do. At first, Quake is intimidated by the first team, which she feels is already filled out, featuring, according to her: a leader (Captain America), a spy (Spider-Woman), a sniper (Hawkeye), a soldier (Noh-Varr), a computer (Vision), a monster (Red Hulk), a goddess (Storm) and a “@$&#*!%” (Iron Man).

The dialogue is as snappy as you expect from Marvel. After Iron Man tells Quake he doesn’t want her and that Cap is a crazy old man that the people in charge ousted as S.H.I.E.L.D. leader, she responds: “Are these the same people who took it from you and gave it to Norman Osborne?” (Marvel fans better know Osborne as the Green Goblin, for those living under rocks). Daniel Warren Johnson’s (no relation to Daisy) loose art is stylish but expressive, especially on faces. The panel layouts all contribute to the story’s quick pacing.

Quake: S.H.I.E.L.D. 50th Anniversary #1 does justice to the character and to the Avengers, and works well as a short story. We learn more about Daisy and have a great time doing it. And sometimes, that’s all a comic book needs to be entertaining.
