Oh, boy! A new Guardians of the Galaxy series, written by Brian Michael Bendis, art by Valerio Schiti and an Arthur Adams cover? Shut up and take our money! Or, have we spoken too soon?

In The Guardians of the Galaxy #1 the line-up has switched: Kitty Pryde for Peter Quill as Star Lord, Ben Grimm the Thing for Gamora; and Venom, Rocket, Groot and Drax. Quill is now king of Spartax and dying of boredom and fending off grotesque suitors. Bendis injects his patented humor throughout and has fun mocking the Marvel universe. “The Infinity Gauntlet,” says the Thing. “Where’s the Infinity Suit of Armor, and who’s wearin’ it?”

Schiti’s art is attractive and the Isanove’s colours do it justice. But overall, the issue’s writing feels rushed and lacks any depth; it’s sort of Bendis-lite. And why shouldn’t it be? Bendis is only writing a thousand other things right now, including his better-written Iron Man series.

Still The Guardians of the Galaxy #1 is lots of fun, the art is eye candy and we all want to know what happens next. Or, as you might like to think of it, the perfect comic book combination.
