Superman: American Alien #2 continues to explore the psychological life of a young Clark Kent. Kent is a teenager making doe eyes at Lana Lang and riding shotgun in his friend Pete’s car. But after a brutal mass murder things in Smallville get dark in a real hurry.

In Superman: American Alien #2 the police ask Clark to help, but he’s afraid. Pete chides him. “What if it was your ma and pa?” he asks the future Superman. Clark tracks the killers down, hiding out in their leader Owen’s house where the thug terrorizes his family and kills the dog. “Who’s got the power now?” Owen says as Clark comes in the front door.

The story in Superman: American Alien #2 is violent and authentic, as the reader and Clark get a taste of some of the worst humanity has to offer. Writer Max Landis is not afraid to make Smallville as dark as Gotham City and it’s daring and powerful too. Tommy Lee Edwards’s art matches the story, and conveys that atmosphere of darkness when things go south.

Superman: American Alien #2 is a healthy surprise, full of emotion and meaning. If DC is going to be gritty, this is the way to do it.
