It’s always a pleasure to see Neal Adams draw Superman/Clark Kent. Right from the first page of The Coming of the Supermen #1 the figures jump out at you. And although the writing is a bit clunky in places, there’s some interesting things going on too.

The plot of The Coming of the Supermen #1 a series of complicated mysteries: who are the three strange Kryptonians dressed like Superman who crash land in an Iowa field?; why has villain Kalibak and his Para-Demons attacked Lex Luthor’s headquarters?; what does Lex have buried behind his building?; and what are the motives of a strange, magical, horned and winged Middle Eastern creature who is trying to share knowledge with a suspicious Superman?

Adams’s work is best when he’s tight, and a few panels in The Coming of the Supermen #1 look rushed. But overall, aided by colourist Alex Sinclair, you can see the old Adams’ magic at work. The Coming of the Supermen #1 has the right amount mystery to warrant reading on as if Neal Adams’ artwork alone was not enough to ensure you were hooked into future issues. Because you will be.
