Lights! Camera! Batman!

In Batman #50 Bruce Wayne is back in costume and stronger than ever. Wayne swoops in o save Jim Gordon from Mister Blooms minions. And, ultimately, it’s Gotham City’s faith in what Batman represents—hope—that will destroys the villain.

Unfortunately, long-winded and preachy, Scott Snyder’s second-to-last issue in the series isn’t much fun as it could be, despite the resurrection of Bruce Wayne as Batman. Momentum flounders when it’s one speech after another, even during the action sequences, where words, you would have thought, should be at a premium. Although Snyder has something to say, mostly about group dynamics, his approach comes across as too pedantic and leaden. It slows Batman #50.

By far the best part of Batman #50 has to be Greg Capullo’s art. Bloom-seed-infected people are wonderfully twisted and contorted. Mister Bloom looks like the schoolmaster from Pink Floyd’s The Wall.

Fans will be happy to see Bruce Wayne retake his mantle, which he will probably have to do again in five years by hey, that’s marketing for you. But Batman’s return is less exciting than then it should be after all the build-up. However, Batman has a new lease on life, and we can but hope the Dark Night’s new adventures will be an improvement on this.

To the Batmobile!
