“Bad guys in this town are changing,” says detective Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) as Gotham season 2 episode 12 begins. Forget petty or even gangland crimes: this city faces genius criminal lunatics. But is Gordon one of them?

Gotham Season 2 Episode 12 introduces two classic villains, creepy Hugo Strange (BD Wong), chief of psychiatry at Arkham Asylum, where Penguin now resides; and Victor Fries/Mr. Freeze, one of the most iconic comic book characters and history’s most sympathetic villain as his single goal is to save his wife. Freeze is a nice change of pace from insane sadists Gordon faced earlier. But the ice gun steals the show with its Matrix-like animation.

Bruce Wayne is nowhere to be seen in this episode, and is not truly missed. The series is most interesting exploring Gordon and his monster of the week, and Mr. Freeze keeps the ball rolling. Gotham Season 2 Episode 12, Mr. Freeze seems over too quick, which is always a sign of a successful series.
