Grimm #5
Dynamite

A tie-in to the small screen adventures of Portland detective Nick Burkhardt who is also a hereditary Wesen hunter (supernatural monsters to me and you) known as a Grimm.

Grimm #5 is behind its TV progenitor because the action takes place when unknown to Nick, his girlfriend Juliette has just been transformed into a Hexenbiest, something which fans of the show, and the on-screen Nick, already know. Having said that, Caitlin Kittredge gives us an alternative version of events with Grimm #5 focusing on Juliette, Adalind, Rosalee and Trubel as they try and track down a map which will lead them to a mysterious painting.

In Grimm #5, Juliette gets to show her Hexenbiest leanings, Adalind is sneaky and duplicitous, Monroe (my favourite character) is totally absent and Nick only puts in an appearance in the last few panels for some heartstring-tugging boy/girl lovey-dovey stuff with the emotionally torn Juliette.

Maria Sanpo’s artwork in Grimm # is workmanlike but hasn’t captured the real life likeness of the players, (wouldn’t have been able to pick any of them out of a line-up) and the story feels like a watered-down version of the real thing.

If you haven’t been watching the TV show, Grimm #5 may well pique your interest enough to make you tune in before the series gets cancelled. At that point, Grimm may well come into its own as the continuing adventures of Portland’s Wesen community.
