Every time you turn around it seems there’s some darn anomaly turning harmless Russian cosmonauts into Mad Gods.
In the case of Divinity #4, Abram Adams is the cosmonaut in question and, having come back to Earth, Adams does what every deity does; he amasses a group of followers in the Australian outback. And Adams takes on the moniker Divinity.
Although Abram Adams has not done anything wrong (yet) the world tends to get a bit het up over this sort of thing and sends the world’s first super team UNITY – X-O Manowar, Livewire, Eternal Warrior and Ninjak to make contact with him – or kick Divinity’s butt if need be.
Since this is a God we’re dealing with here, Divinity susses their latent hostility and zaps them into a warped reality where they can do nothing except get beat down by Divinity’s followers. As they struggle to free themselves, Divinity tries to put his world back the way he left it but when you’ve been lost in space for fifty years, and that takes some hefty time warping; Divinity doesn’t even have a big blue Police box to help him.
Although, narrative wise, this is a well-worn path, both Matt Kindt’s writing and Trevor Hairsine’s artwork are well above the normal run of the mill input you might have expected. As the denouement to the series Divinity #4 is both a satisfying and accomplished read. But, let’s not forget the golden rule of comic books, you can’t keep a good God down (or even a bad one) and, I suspect and hope, Divinity II will be coming your way soon. In the meantime pick all four issues of Divinity and see why it’s worth your time and your money.
