One hopes creators Don McGregor (Lady Rawhide) and Matt Wagner (Lady Zorro) do not see this comic book, they might not appreciate the clumsy, pedestrian and juvenile story presented here. Dynamite appears to be channelling the worst of publisher Zenescope’s, and we expect better given Dynamite’s pedigree (with the calibre of Alex Ross, Frank Miller and Howard Chaykin, to name a few).
The plot itself, two sexy lady heroes running from a pack of wolves and the resulting escapades, although simple, is serviceable. Unfortunately writer Denton and artist Villegas still manage to make a mess of it. As simple as the plot is, it still has problems. There is a lack of chemistry between the leading ladies. The plot, what there is of it, is very contrived. The wolves attack and kill all the men and none of the women, for no real reason except the story calls for it. Ho hum.
Costume wise, Lady Rawhide seems to be impervious to the cold, riding around, as she does, in the snow, wearing a hip-high bikini bottom and a shoulder-less bodice. There is an attempt at an explanation for this – not just certain comic book fans in their basement going for some ‘me’ time – but as a psychological edge for Lady Rawhide. Ultimately, It all comes across as a transparent and cynical excuse to indulge in some immature titillation (pun intended).
Regarding Villegas’s art, some of the composition is good, but mostly it is slapdash and breast centric. The inking is scratchy at best. Hickman’s coloring may be the best thing about Lady Rawhide, it may not be spectacular, but it is consistent and neat.
McGregor and Wagner look away now!!!!
