Harrow County # 4, is the new Dark Horse horror comic, theming nature versus nurture. Emmy is the reincarnated witch Hester Beck, who society rejected so she called forth demons and was killed by her flock. Now Emmy’s ante-life as a witch—of which she has no memory—has come back to haunt her (pun intended). But is Emmy, who just wants a normal life, simply a reborn witch or, actually, her own person.

Harrow County #4 finds Emmy fleeing a town mob, including her father, and reaching the woods. Where she meets a lonesome demon who is furious with her for forgetting him. So Emmy runs some more. But kindly pharmacist Mr. Sorrell kidnaps Emmy and suddenly she can’t tell her friends and enemies. Sorrell reveals he is a member of her flock protecting her and doing her bidding. He tells Emmy about Hester Beck who “called up the haints from the dark places,” Sorrell tells Emmy she created her flock from mud, but gave them free will. In the context of the story the plot line is believable. Unfortunately for Emmy her flock still wants her dead.

The story by and art have plenty of action and feeling. Although Tyler Crook’s art is very stylistic, it is consistent and neat. Faces are very expressive. Colours are made to please, especially the pinks inside Sorrell’s house.

Picking up Harrow County # 4 mid-story arc didn’t stop it from being entertaining and promising. And if I’m rooting for Emmy, so will you.
