In New Avengers #4 after the Knights of the Infinite space-kidnap Hukling and Wiccan the young Skrull Hulkling pulls the legendary magic sword Excelsior (ah, Marvel) from a stone, fulfilling a prophecy that he is the Knights’ king. To the space-rescue come the New Avengers, including Hawkeye, Pod, Power Man, Songbird, Squirrel Girl and White Tiger.

The New Avengers travel to the Knights’ base the Forbidden Asteroids to find Hulkling and Wiccan battling the Lovecraftian Moridun. “There’s a giant space Cthulhu in the space castle,” says Songbird. She’s not far off, especially since Moridun’s mantra is “Life is horror.”

New Avengers #4 is a fast-paced action-adventure story and writer Al Ewing is not beyond mocking his own story. “We’re saving the space elves from the octopus wizard, right?” asks Power Man.

Art chores by Gerardo Sandoval are excellent as usual, attractive with a good sense of story-telling. Donald Sánchez Almara’s colouring is deep and detailed, giving the pages a painted look.

So far New Avengers has been a read-worthy series, and a fine Avengers assemblage. We expect more delightful issues from the creative team. But lets leave the last word to Stan Lee: Excelsior!
