In Black Magick #3 Rowan Black is a police officer in Portsmouth USA. Black is investigating a series of murders with one common theme, the occult. A fairly run of the mill plotline you may think but I forgot to mention something, Rowan Black is a Witch!

In Black Magick #3 it becomes clear the shadowy killers are very aware of Rowan’s occult credentials and the murders are linked to her mystical powers. It looks as though things are building up nicely for a confrontation between Rowan Black, her magical mates and a sinister organisation called ‘Aira’.

Image Comics have a potential hit on their hands in Black Magick #3. Greg Rucka’s story telling is accessible and intriguing whilst Nicola Scott’s largely grayscale artwork has a pleasant and disturbing ghostly quality. The occasional splashes of colour, used to show spells being cast, are striking in their juxtaposition with the otherwise monochromed artwork approach.

Sometimes I am put off some comic books by the amount of effort required to invest in familiarising myself with a totally new universe of characters and ideas before any enjoyment can be gained from the story. I am pleased to say this is not the case with Black Magick #3. Rucka’s expert plotting introduces the world of Portsmouth USA alongside the entertainment resulting in a rewarding reading experience.

I recommend you catch up with Black Magick #3 as soon as you can, you will not be disappointed! And it will, as Nina Simone once sung, ‘put a spell on you…..’
