In Captain Marvel #1 Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel is a soldier first and foremost. That’s why people are surprised Danvers agreed to take a desk job as commander of the Alpha Flight Space Station, Earth’s first line of defense. Luckily for Captain Marvel her first day at work is eventful

Captain Marvel #1 feels like a Star Trek episode, with Danvers as captain, Abagail Brand as her No. 1, a science officer in Lt. Wendy Kawasaki, and an away team (Aurora, Puck and Sasquatch from the original Alpha Flight).

During a dull meeting over a waste disposal contract Danvers insists on joining the away team to stop an asteroid. “I like a mission, a purpose,” Captain Marvel narrates. But when an unidentified ship threatens the station Danvers faces a new mystery.

There are some nice touches, like the co-ed showers. And the techno-babble,  thankfully is bare-bones. It will be interesting to see how the series develops each of the personalities here,  Puck is fleshed out in Captain Marvel #1, warts and all.

Kais Anka’s art is clean, tight, and attractive. The story-telling technique keeps the momentum moving forward. Colorist Matthew Wilson is key to the art’s depth, employs a rich pallet and celebrates light.

If you like space opera then Captain Marvel #1 won’t disappoint. Never dull and tightly written it’s a good romp that promises more.
