The Silver Surfer and new companion, Dawn Greenwood, head back to Earth in Silver Surfer #1, and since she missed the holidays Greenwood’s father throws a “New-Hallow-Givings Birth-Mas” party. It’s all fun and games until the aliens show up.

The alien attack is unique. The Hordax have stolen Earth’s culture; even artist Michael Allred’s indie superhero Madman is sucked away, a nice Easter egg for all you Allred fans out there.

In Silver Surfer#1, the Hordax don’t just take all Earth’s fictional characters, they also use a device to infuse its soldiers with the essence of Earth’s most famous protagonists. It’s fun to see the green, four-eyed Hordax transformed into fan favourites like the Doctor (Who, that is), Spock, Clockwork Orange’s Alex, the Wizard of Oz’s Scarecrow, and so on.

But in that transformation lays writer Dan Slott’s clever solution to the dilemma facing the Silver Surfer and mankind, and it’s worth reading Silver Surfer #1 just to get there.

For Silver Surfer#1, Allred’s art style is the kind you either like or hate. If it’s the former, he’s in top form here, with tight lines and well-drafted faces and figures. And whether you like Allred or not, he knows how to graphically tell a story.

Silver Surfer#1 fits well within the boundaries of the funky direction some Marvel Comics have taken (i.e., Squirrel Girl, Ms. Marvel, Patsy Walker). If you’re tired of serious and gritty comic books (we’re looking at you, DC) then you should give Silver Surfer #1 a shot.
