The X-Files has always been a case study of Plato’s parable of the cave, except now we finally get to see some of what’s actually casting the shadows on the wall. It’s a striking departure from the previous seasons, but does not detract from the many mysteries that remain within the series.
The mini-series’ title “My Struggle” appears to refer to both Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson, defying time) and Fox Mulder (David Duchovny). The tension between them is palpable. Scully loves Mulder and the mission but can’t deal with his bi-polar nature. Now Mulder’s in full manic mode, convinced again he’s on to the truth.
Fan favorite FBI Assistant Director Walter Skinner (Mitch Pileggi) tracks down the reclusive Mulder on behalf of famous and wealthy right-wing media firebrand and conspiracy nut Tad O’Malley (Joel McHale). O’Malley claims he uncovered a plot to take over the country using alien technology-based weapons, and actually shows Mulder one of the vehicles. But more importantly, there’s a flashback sequence showing the actual Roswell, New Mexico UFO incident!
X-Files fans have waited 10 years to see this, and won’t be disappointed. Bravo to creator and writer Chris Carter for changing the formula and giving us want we want. Carter proves there’s still plenty of room for mystery and conspiracy, but what fun it is to see the shadow-casters. Regarding the new-comers Joel McHale and Annet Mahendru as a terrified repeat abductee are outstanding.
X-Files: My Struggle episode 1 gives us everything we love about the show and takes it to a new level. Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks?
