Johnny Depp’s cinematic shenanigans may epitomise piratical swashbuckling for an entire generation or two, but Action Lab Entertainment is doing their darndest to re-energize a genre which used to be a comic book staple under the Princeless banner of titles.

The latest offering, Princeless: Raven, The Pirate Princess #8 is a rollicking adventure of sibling rivalry and alligators, a classic combination. When Raven and her companions are taken captive by Raven’s dastardly brothers, Crow and Magpie (their parents really had a bird fixation when it came to naming their kids) Raven’s all girl crew hatch a cunning plan to spring her.

Princeless: Raven, The Pirate Princess #8 has explosions, the storming of a castle, ninjas and alligator wrestling. In short, it’s pirate paradise. The title: Raven, The Pirate Princess may be a little “on the nose” but don’t let that put you off because the content delivers exactly what it says on the tin. Rosy Higgins’ art is exceptional and Jeremy Whitley obviously had a ball with the dialogue.

If you like pirates, you’ll love this and even if you don’t, this may just be the comic book to change your mind. Give it a try and Roger won’t be the only one feeling Jolly, I promise.
