If you’re still fuming about the demise of everyone’s favourite Canadian, Wolverine fans might like to look away now, Charles Soule the man responsible for ‘The Death of Wolverine’ is back with Strange Attractors #2. How Soule can sleep at night I just don’t know. The fact that he’s also responsible for less fatal titles like Daredevil, She-Hulk, The Inhumans, Superman and Star Wars may help.
Strange Attractors #2, his latest brainchild, deals with the strange mentor/student relationship between Heller Wilson and the eccentric Professor Brownfield. Wilson wants the Prof to help him with his thesis but the trade-off for that is he gets to help Brownfield carry out seemingly meaningless tasks to eventually ‘fix’ New York City. In Strange Attractors #2 it’s all to do with math theory and there is a noticeable absence of fisticuffs, explosions (although a couple of buildings do get demolished) and men wearing tights here. So no bad thing.
Strange Attractors #2 is much more subtle than your average comic book, however, the danger is no less insidious. Different then from Charles Soule’s usual fare and the pace is likewise reduced to something more thoughtful and considered. If you want cerebral, Strange Attractors #2 is the place for you.
With three issues still to go it’s difficult to work out just where this might be heading. Is Brownfield the hero or villain of the piece? Is Wilson going to turn out to be the faithful disciple or the lone rebel standing up against the mathematical tyrant? And what kind of name is ‘Boolean’ for a dog anyway?
Answers to all these questions and more await those who savour the cerebral menace in Strange Attractors #2. The thinking fan’s comic book.
