“If you go down to the woods today, you’re sure of a big surprise…” Did nobody ever tell the kids in The Woods #26 any nursery rhymes or fairy stories when they were growing up? If they had, they might have known that going down to the woods all alone was a really BAD idea, because all sorts of nasty things happen to you if you do.

In the case of The Woods #26, they get zapped into another dimension that’s a bit medieval, a bit Victorian and a bit mystical. In order to get back home, they have to invade the Black City, which is more bad news because every incomer over many generations that have tried it ends up dead. But Karen, Ben, Sanami and Sander have something none of the others had. A computer! That’s right, their lives will be saved because of a mobile phone with a save the world’ app.

Actually, I just made that last bit up, but The Woods #26 takes a curious approach to the standard lost in another dimension’ scenario. Not sure how well this peculiar mix works but it’s inventive and the grief and loss of those left behind in the normal world is palpable. The Woods #26 feels like it’s winding up for a big finale so if magical realms and computer gizmos are your thing, better get in quick.
