To be honest with you, I like the purity of superheroes; I tire of self-referential, in-joking, ‘hey look we’re breaking down the forth wall here’ triteness that seems to be a blight on the superhero genre at this moment in time. It’s not edgy and dark my superhero friend, it’s ill-defined and muddy. It is not entertainment, it’s lazy, shoddy and ultimately denigrating. Don’t take my word for it – wait two decades – and then look back.
Which brings me to the breath of fresh air that is GEEK-GIRL #1; it has heart it has soul; it has something that is missing from most mainstream superhero comic books, the often overlooked concept of reader engagement. So, full marks to writer Sam Johnson for giving the reader something to enjoy and dare I say – play on words intended (it’s a not a pun; I haven’t got time for an explanation now but join me later in my master writing class) – marvel at.
There is not a play on words for DC so you’ll just have to take my word that I’m tilting at that publishing house too, when I say GEEK-GIRL #1 is a whole lot more of a rewarding read than anything – and let me make that as crystal clear as I can, in the confines of this review – ANYTHING currently in the mainstream world of superheroes.
Wait, wait, I know what you’re thinking – as Clint Eastwood once remarked, well twice, but he meant it the second time – where’s the school of superheroes? The cube? That hammer? Old Man Logan? The endless links to other endless other links that are supposed to bait our breath with anticipation but just empty our pockets instead,
Well, there not here, not in GEEK-GIRL #1, thankfully, instead there is a well thought out story, characters who operate for the story, rather than themselves and that invertible franchise. GEEK-GIRL #1 delivers a solid and engrossing read. Carlos Granda’s artwork just flows through the panels and across the pages, forever leading the eye on and on.
Which just leave this question: WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? Buy GEEK-GIRL #1 and reacquaint yourself with how the genre should be before it got hijacked and tainted and stopped being pure and started being a succession of dollar signs.
Geek-Girl #1 is Out Now in regular, digital and variant editions, and available at www.geekgirlcomics.com and www.comixology.com
