What happens when wise cracking, fanboy favourite, psycho Harley Quinn goes to Hollywood? Well, just what you would expect. The plot in Harley Quinn #20 really serves as a set-up for a string jokes involving Mr. J’s main squeeze traveling to tinsel town to retrieve a daughter supposedly indoctrinated into a blackmailing cult. That’s basically Harley Quinn #20. And you know what, why complicate things? Just enjoy the er…..experience of Harley Quinn at her worst/best.
DC does have a sense of humour and it is here at full tilt in Harley Quinn #20, but it’s gritty and bloody, of course. The quips fly fast and hard. “I couldn’t feel a dump truck falling on me at this point,” says the daughter after she is shot in the foot. “Drugs?” asks Harley Quinn. “Sure, what’cha got?”
Harley Quinn #20 has plenty of sexual innuendos for an adult audience. A midnight cowboy advises on how to consume tacos: “Eat it from the end. Shoving it into your face is just uncouth.” “No one’s ever *nom* complained before,” Harley states.
In many ways Harley Quinn appears to be the id of writers Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti. Experience bad and rude customer service? Kill ‘em. Got pushed by a rude customer? Shove ‘em into traffic. And so on and so forth. John Timms’ art is satisfying and stylish and Alex Sinclair’s colors give Timms’ artwork additional depth.
Harley fans will find plenty to enjoy here. And if you’re new to the character, Harley Quinn #20 is a pretty representative example of what you’re going to get. Now we’re just waiting for a Harley Quinn–Deadpool cross over. Make it happen! Did someone mention television series? If not, why not!
