SLAM!#1 takes us into the rough and tumble world of roller derby courtesy of best-selling novelist, animation and comics writer, Pamela Ribon. I may as well fess up and say that the only thing I know about roller derby comes from the Jim Croce song Roller Derby Queen where he sings the praises of the ‘meanest hunk of woman that anybody’s ever seen down in the arena.’
SLAM! #1 is more girl power and life-affirming than that as both of the central characters, Jennifer Chu, aka, Knockout, and Maisie Huff, aka Ithinka Can, are both cute as a button and gosh darn nice to boot. They both have emotional baggage but of the cute and cuddly kind and both have cats and like sleepovers.
What tension there is in SLAM!#1 comes when they are drafted to different teams. How will they ever cope? Will their friendship survive? Will it be the white cat or the grey one who’s first to hawk up a hairball?
The answer to these and more riveting questions will be revealed in the next issue of SLAM!
