Ancient prophecies just aren’t what they used to be in this whimsical send-up of the ‘with great power comes great responsibilities’ theme.

Power Up #1 asks the question: What would happen if four normal human beings with all the flaws and foibles that condition implies were chosen to be superhuman warriors in the fight against evil? Keep reading and you may find out.

Power Up #1 focuses mainly on Amie, a very disaffected twenty-something with a shed load of attitude who whiles away her time working in a pet shop. One day there’s a great flash of light and a strange being in a John Travolta white suit, circa Saturday Night Fever appears spouting gibberish and attacks Amie for no apparent reason. Fighting back instinctively Amie realises she now has some sort of super power.

Soon to be joined by Kevin, a washed up athlete, Sandy, a mother of two teenagers and Silas who just happens to be a goldfish and you have your basic combo ready to battle cosmic forces to a standstill. Or maybe not, because expectations are made to be broken and based on this opening we could be in for a few surprises and also a few chuckles along the way.

Kate Leth is a New York Times bestselling author (Bravest Warriors, Adventure Time: Seeing Red) and tells the story with great affection for the genre. Matt Cummings’ (Adventure Time) artwork is cartoon realism if there is such a thing and gives the impression that whichever way this story goes Cummings art is going to be a perfect match for the perfect comic book.
