A-Force #2 Marvel Comics
A-Force #2
Marvel Comics

The fallout from Marvel’s Secret War continues and one of the more interesting manifestations is A-Force. It’s not a team, but Captain Marvel, Medusa, Mico Minoru, She-Hulk, Singularity and Dazzler appear in each other’s orbit. They’re all female too, so XX-Force would have been more accurate, but confusing and patronising.

In A-Force #2, unlike the others, the child Singularity is an alien, but this loose confederation of superheroes do not remember her or Battleworld for that matter. Unfortunately, the powerful energy being Antimatter is trying to kill Singularity. She goes to her former friends for help. In A-Force #2 they recruit witchy-power Mico and former disco-now-roller-derby star Dazzler, complete with Mohawk.

For A-Force #2, writers Kelly Thompson and G. Willow Wilson do a good job handling the interactions and dialogue among the characters and juggling different heroes’ individuality. Medusa for her part is just as haughty as ever. After Antimatter suggests she’s a pet the Inhuman queen’s indignation reminds us of her formidability. Jorge Molina’s art, aided by colorist Laura Martin, is pure pleasure, with a dynamic story-telling technique and expressive faces.

Marvel Comics has gone all-out with the Secret Wars aftermath and making for some interesting story lines as well. A-Force #2 is definitely one of the best of the emerging comic books from the House of Progressive Ideas. Long may that last.
