Death Head #1 is the new Dark Horse horror comic, with a “Jeepers Creepers” movie feel to it, which is no bad thing. The plot jumps between three stories: hiking couple Niles and Justine finding a macabre church in the woods; Maggie, a juvenile delinquent in a girls’ Catholic School who decides to trip out on mushrooms; and Bee, a young boy thrown into the sewers by bullies where he meets the ghost of a drowned girl.

Writers Zack and Nick Keller have a sense of humour. “I guess on the plus side we can piss anywhere we like,” says Niles about the forest. Also, the hiking couple are not afraid to fight back, which is always welcome. A minor complaint: Niles and Justine’s, and Bee’s stories have already shown a connection to the villain, while Maggie’s story has no such payoff and for that reason feels disconnected.

Joanna Estep’s artwork is loose but the storytelling is well paced. The last full-page pin-up of the monster nicely concludes the issue.

Uncle Eerie may be spinning in his warren, but horror fans will enjoy this romp!
