Aloha, Hawaiian Dick is the sequel series to the 2008 series Hawaiian Dick, by B. Scott Moore. The series is set in 1950s Hawaii, in a post-war world. Byrd is our hero, a WW2 veteran who has been fired from the police after an “incident” with a suspect. With nowhere else to turn, he goes to Hawaii, to meet with his friend Mo. By day, Byrd spends his time living the life in an Island Paradise, by night, the myths and legends of Hawaii come alive and it’s up to Byrd and Mo to solve the mysteries of Hawaii.

In Aloha, Hawaiian Dick, we’re greeted to even stranger things. There are two Byrds around at the same time; one in Hawaii and one in Kansas. By the second issue, a major player has died and at the funeral, things aren’t quite what they seem. Will Byrd live long enough to solve the mystery once again?

Aloha, Hawaiian Dick is an interesting read. The 50s style art by Jacob Wyatt might not be to everyone’s taste, but Aloha, Hawaiian Dick does have a strong story with a great supernatural storyline determined to delve right into the myths and legends of Hawaii. It’s clear from the get-go Moore has really done his research into Hawaiian folklore, as well as 1950s culture. Well worth a read if you’re interested in the supernatural and/or detective comics.
